Investigating Information Texts

26/1/2016

Today in Class 3 we began a new literacy topic thinking about non-fiction and especially information texts. Some of us had never really seen an information text before so Miss Ball brought in some different ones all about the Romans!

We could really see the differences between the information texts and other texts such as stories, plays, newspapers and poems. Not only did we learn some new facts about Roman life but we also discovered the features of an information text such as: contents, index, bullet point, subheadings and pictures (with captions)

Over the next couple of weeks we even get the chance to write our own information book about the Romans so stay tuned to the blog for updates!

In Science this term Class 3 are looking at humans and animals. Today we were researching the human skeleton and how are skeletons are important for helping us move, keeping us upright and also protecting all of our organs. We even learned some of the 206 bones in our body and where they are.

After all that hard work learning about bones we couldn't resist a dance to the shake them skeleton bones song. Enjoy the pictures of us doing a skeleton groove!

Today we had a special guest from Parkside Academy. In Class 3 we have been asked to write a song about Sunnybrow and what makes our school great. If our song is good enough we have been invited to a special concert with the mayor! We still have lots of work to do so watch this space for updates.

Our favorite part of the Auckland Castle trip was ice-skating. Some of us had never been ice skating before and there were a few times we slipped and tripped but we were laughing too much to care. We had the best time as a class and would love to do it again!

As a special Christmas treat Class 3 were allowed to go on a special trip to Auckland Castle. When we arrived at the Castle we were shown around the huge rooms and learned about the special Prince Bishops who used to live there. We even had a chance to dress up as Prince Bishops and the Pope!

After we had visited some of the fantastic rooms in the Castle we made some tree decorations from pine cones, stickers and pipe cleaners. Read our next blog post to find out what happened next......

Just before Bonfire Night the Crook fire service visited Class 3 and Class 4 to teach us how we can be extra safe around fires and fireworks. We were taught how to be safe with sparklers, what to do if a firework doesn't explode and that if any of our clothes catch fire we must Stop, Drop and Roll.

Next the fire service even dressed Miss Ball in their full uniform and we had the chance to look at the fire truck and fire the hose. It was so much fun!

Parent Event

Before we broke up for our Christmas holidays, we had our parents and carers join us in  Class 3 to take part in our Numeracy session. We showed them how to properly use the more than and less than signs, how to use column addition (on really large numbers!) and how to solve addition word problems.

After a while I think the parent's needed a quick break so we had a chance to show them some of our fun numeracy apps on the class I pads.

In class 3 we have been discovering Italy and had a special treat when Miss Ball brought in some popular Italian dishes for us to taste. Most of the dishes were very tasty but others were food we definitely won't be eating again!

Traditional Tales

In Class 3 we have been looking at Traditional tales in Literacy sessions. We read the tale of St George and the Dragon.

Once we knew the features of a traditional tale we wanted to know about traditional tales from other countries. We investigated by reading and researching traditional tales from UK, Spain, France and India.

We found that all of the traditional tales were different stories but had the exact same features as St George and the dragon.

We had lots of fun working in teams to research and present all we had found out to the class!
